Where marks are usually lost
Six-mark extended answers that list facts without linking them into a sequence, and practical questions about variables, method and reliability. Biology also has more precise vocabulary than students expect; ‘energy is made’ loses marks where ‘energy is released’ gains them.
How a tutor usually helps
Working through each required practical as a written exam question, rehearsing extended answers with a clear structure, and spaced retrieval of key terms.
Details differ by board and change over time. Always check the current specification on the exam board’s website.

How to use past papers properly
Past papers help most when they are used to find gaps. Doing paper after paper without reviewing them rarely changes a grade.
