Where marks are lost
The most common problem is a limited vocabulary, which slows children down in comprehension and word-choice questions. Inference questions also cost marks because the answer is not stated directly. Timing is the other challenge: many children spend too long reading the passage and run out of time. Children who speak Cantonese or Mandarin at home often need extra work on English vocabulary and idioms.
How tutors usually help
Tutors usually start with a short diagnostic, then plan practice around the format of the target schools. Lessons combine teaching new question types with timed practice, and errors are logged by type so parents can see progress. Closer to the test, tutors add full mock papers and pacing practice.
Test content and format differ between schools and can change each year. Check with your target schools and local authority.
