GCSE Chinese

GCSE Chinese is examined in Mandarin. We match students with tutors by teaching language, exam board and verified examiner experience, and we understand the needs of Cantonese-speaking families.

AQA 8673 · Pearson Edexcel 1CN0

Two kinds of GCSE Chinese learner

Most students we see fall into one of two groups, and they need quite different lessons.

Cantonese at home

  • Often reads and writes well, usually in traditional characters
  • Needs Mandarin pronunciation, tones and fluency for speaking and listening
  • Benefits from practice reading simplified characters
  • May prefer grammar explained in Cantonese or English

Mandarin at home, or new to Chinese

  • Mandarin-speaking families: speaking is often strong, writing needs structure
  • New learners need vocabulary built theme by theme
  • Translation tasks reward accuracy over length
  • Exam technique for English-language questions matters

How the exam is structured

Both current specifications assess four skills equally. All four papers must be taken at the same tier: Foundation (grades 1–5) or Higher (grades 4–9).

PaperWhat it involvesWeight
Paper 1: ListeningMandarin recordings. Questions in English, answered in English or non-verbally.25%
Paper 2: SpeakingRole-play, photo card and general conversation, all in Mandarin.25%
Paper 3: ReadingUnderstanding Chinese texts, including translation from Chinese into English.25%
Paper 4: WritingWritten tasks and translation from English into Chinese.25%

Structure summarised from AQA 8673. Pearson Edexcel 1CN0 also weights the four skills at 25% each. Check the current specification for timings and task details.

Traditional and simplified characters

Students who learned traditional characters in Hong Kong should also become confident reading simplified characters. Ask the school which characters appear in the papers and what is accepted in answers for your child’s board, as this shapes how reading and writing practice is planned.

There is no separate GCSE for Cantonese speaking. A tutor who speaks Cantonese can still be very useful for explaining grammar and exam strategy, alongside Mandarin speaking practice.

Choosing a tutor

Use these shortcuts to open the search with the right filters already applied. The number shows how many published tutors match.

Speaking examiners

When a student sits GCSE Chinese as a private candidate, the exam centre may ask the family to arrange a Mandarin speaking examiner (teacher-examiner). We match parents, schools and exam centres with checked speaking examiners. About speaking examiner matching

Many students from Hong Kong families read Chinese well but speak Cantonese at home. Here is what that means for the four GCSE papers.
