11+ subject guide
11+ Maths
11+ maths is based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum, but questions are usually less familiar than school work and often need several steps. Accuracy and speed matter equally.
Number · Fractions · Ratio · Algebra · Geometry · Data
- What is tested
- Number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, early algebra, geometry, data
- Format
- Multiple choice or written answers, depending on the school
- Used in
- GL Assessment, Sutton stage 2, school-set papers
- Good time to start
- Year 4
Common question types
- Mental arithmetic and the four operations, including converting fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Ratio, proportion, and speed, distance and time.
- Early algebra: sequences and simple equations.
- Geometry and measures: area, perimeter, angles and volume.
- Data handling: charts, averages and probability.
- Multi-step word problems.
Where marks are lost
Multi-step word problems cost the most marks: children understand each step but misread the question or convert units wrongly. Slow mental arithmetic also stops children finishing. Some questions go beyond what school has covered, such as harder ratio and algebra, so they need to be introduced early.
How tutors usually help
Tutors usually start with a short diagnostic, then plan practice around the format of the target schools. Lessons combine teaching new question types with timed practice, and errors are logged by type so parents can see progress. Closer to the test, tutors add full mock papers and pacing practice.
Test content and format differ between schools and can change each year. Check with your target schools and local authority.
